Grand Canyon Competes for Preservation Grants
Twenty national parks, including Grand Canyon National Park, are competing for approximately $2 million in grants to help preserve historic sites within the parks. The grant funds will be provided by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Society, and American Express.
The competition—in which members of the public can voice their opinions—is designed to increase general public awareness about historic preservation in national parks, as well as to enhance this preservation for the selected sites. It is also meant to commemorate the centennial of the National Park Service.
Representatives from the competing national parks have the responsibility of making the best case for their sites to the grant authorities. However, members of the public can influence the process by voting for their five favorite parks at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/voteyourpark/. Voting can also be done by using #VoteYourPark and @savingplaces on Twitter and Instagram. The voting is open until July 5.
