Grand Canyon Backcountry Comment Period Extended
The period for submitting public comments on proposals to revise management of the Grand Canyon’s backcountry has been extended by the National Park Service. The extension runs to April 4.
The revised management plan includes several proposals, including requiring hikers who walk more than 5 miles down popular trails to obtain a day-use permit and pay a minimum $5 fee. The plan also sets new policies on recreational activities of growing popularity, including canyoneering, rim-to-rim excursions, and backpacking trips along the Colorado River. The proposals apply to the 1.1 million acres of the Grand Canyon backcountry—most of which is under consideration for wilderness designation.
