Grand Canyon Water Restrictions Implemented
A break in the transcanyon water pipeline prompted officials with Grand Canyon National Park to implement mandatory Level-2 water conservation restrictions on Thursday, June 23. The break made the pump at Indian Garden inoperable and led to immediate repair operations in addition to the restrictions.
Visitor services at the South Rim are affected. Concession stands are forced to use disposable dishes and utensils and to curtail their water use for preparing food and washing dishes. Hotels are required to use low-water cleaning methods, and restaurants can serve water only if requested by customers.
While the restrictions remain in effect, water is not available at Cottonwood Campground, Manzanita Rest Area, Bright Angel Campground, or Boat Bench. Water conservation measures are also in effect at Phantom Ranch. Because of the lack of water availability, hikers and backpackers are advised to carry their own drinking water or to filter and treat creek water.
The water restrictions extend beyond the national park to surrounding residential areas, where homeowners are restricted from watering their lawns and washing their cars. Officials also instructed residents to limit their shower lengths and to turn off water when shaving or brushing teeth.
