News | Three new condor chicks a first for Grand Canyon region
Some good news on the California Condor front. Three condor chicks have hatched during one breeding season. This is a record for Northern Arizona.
The population of California condors is now approaching 400 after being almost wiped out in the 1980’s. At one time the population was down to just 22.
The California Condor can live upwards of 60 years with wingspans in excess of 9 feet. It is rare to see them in the wild but as the population grows hopefully sightings will become more frequent. Two known nests are on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon while another is on the Kaibab Plateau.
