Fossil Day Offers a Season Finale Event of Jurassic Proportions

The Grand Canyon plans to have a seasonal sendoff on October 17th that encompasses history, science, and dinosaurs. National Fossil Day is regarded as the perfect time to promote the significance of fossils. Fossils are the bones that structure the anatomy of life in a prehistoric world. The role that fossils play in piecing together the past is extraordinary. Scientists continue to find new ways which fossils can be used to decrypt the secrets of the past. This information is used both for historical purposes and helps secure our future. However, many people take the value of fossils for granted because they do not know what power these ancient rocks hold. That is why Fossil Day is such a fun and enlightening experience.

All day, free events will be happening around the Grand Canyon. There is no registration necessary for this event either. It is simply a fun day, filled with education and exploration. Here is a list of the event schedule guests can expect to unearth while visiting the park:

Fossil Walk: The Fossil Walk will take place from 9 until 10 a.m., starting at Bright Angel Trailhead. Throughout this walk in Grand Canyon Village, visitors will be shown common fossils found in the area. Plus, walkers will explore the prolific Permian Sea Bed. This is an area that has been excavated to reap the rewards of many ancient fossils. Guests never know what they might find here. It is advised to wear comfortable shoes during this adventure.

Fun with Fossils: Fun with Fossils is an hour-long experience, starting at 1 p.m. This quest will take place at the Yavapai Geology Museum. Throughout the Fun with Fossils event, park rangers will host various prehistoric themed games and activities. The event is open to and appropriate for all ages. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the event in its entirety or pick and choose the activities as they arise.

Ask a Scientist: Ask a Scientist is a special event that also takes place at 1 p.m. at the Yavapai Geology Museum. Throughout this event, explorers can meet with Grand Canyon scientists and ask them questions about fossils. The scientists attending this event will also discuss the importance of fossils throughout the Grand Canyon.

Paleontology at Grand Canyon: From 7 p.m. until 8 p.m., Paleontology at the Grand Canyon will take place at the Shrine of the Ages. This event will answer many of the more invasive questions revolving around paleontology and the role of fossils. Additionally, visitors will learn about some of the scientific research surrounding fossils that are taking place throughout the Grand Canyon.
