Grand Canyon North Rim Opens May 15
The Grand Canyon South Rim is well known as the definitive Grand Canyon vacation destination for those looking for a life changing experience. The lesser known and lesser visited Grand Canyon North Rim has a shorter season but still has its charms. For one, it captures about only 10% of Grand Canyon visitors so it is certainly less busy during high season. The North Rim will be ready for visitors this Sunday May 15, 2022. Facilities include the Grand Canyon Lodge, North Rim Visitor Center, and Roughrider Saloon.
If you plan to visit Grand Canyon North Rim, be aware it is a full 4.5 hour drive of 220 miles (354 km) from the South Rim gates. With the price of gas this year, you need to be a committed visitor! Your alternative path is a 21 mile (34 km) hike across the canyon. The hike includes a 4850 ft decent from the south rim to the Colorado River followed by a 5850 ft climb to the North Rim.
