Night Sky

What Time Does The Grand Canyon Close?

The Grand Canyon National Park never closes.  The businesses and offices close, however the park itself remains open.  There is a community of over 2500 people who live and work in the park, complete with schools, library, grocery store, post office, bank, and clinic. Add to that visitors enjoying the night strolling along the rim under the canvas of night skies and moonlight.

The nights are also the time for the rightful owners of the canyon to reclaim what is theirs.  Skunks waddle along through the walkways, ringtails scamper in and around Bright Angel Lodge, bobcats skulk along the rock walls outside El Tovar.  It is their time with the canyon.  Share it with them.  It can be a lasting memory.  A special moment in time.  Walk in silence. Listen for the swoosh of owl wings and watch for a deer or elk sleeping next to the trail.

Joy Grand Canyon

Joy taught environmental sciences at Southern Vermont College and became active in outdoor land use.  Joy now lives ‘off-the-grid’ near the Grand Canyon on an acreage with solar power, and hauls water for her own needs and for her struggling raised-bed desert garden, dogs, cat, chickens, and Garrett-the-goose. Joy has rafted the Colorado River from Moab to Lake Mead, hiked many of the trails, and stayed at Phantom Ranch several times either by hiking or by mule.  Learning and reading is her passion, and she is constantly learning more about the Grand Canyon.
