Maswick South Builds New Lodging Options for Travelers
Out with the old and in with the new…
That seems like an idiom that is echoed throughout every aspect of our society. Yet,
sometimes, for safety, age, and even aesthetics, having fresh options can be a good
thing.
At least, that is the common theme coming from the Maswik South lodging complex as
the last six buildings from the old lodging structure were demolished and hauled away
on May 30, 2019.
Xanterra South Rim, L.L.C is the brains behind the operation, through which they plan
to rebuild Maswik South lodging complex to make it better than ever. Plus, the company
has commissioned new roads to be laid, which will run to and from the vicinity, making
the lodge easier to access.
The original buildings were constructed in 1971. Even for only being two years shy of
five decades, the buildings had long surpassed their expected lifetime. Still change can
be hard, but even harder is the expected price for the project’s completion is
approximately $30 million.
Still, the complex is promised to be a major improvement and that kind of face-lift takes
time and money. Four new ADA compliant buildings will be built on the existing site,
with the addition of roads, pedestrian walkways, and other site improvements. Instead
of having ninety basic rooms, the new complex will feature one-hundred-and-twenty
mid-scale rooms. Thirty of those rooms will be improved with kitchenettes.
“This is the first major lodging improvement to take place in decades at the South Rim
of the Grand Canyon and we’re underway during the Centennial year of Grand Canyon
National Park, which makes the investment all the more momentous,” said Mia Bell,
General Manager of Grand Canyon, South Rim who is overseeing the project. “The
buildings served countless visitors for nearly 50 years and the new construction will
offer a lodging option that meets the needs of many of our guests. We are proud to be a
part of enhancing the national park experience, preparing it for the next 100 years.”
The new Maswik guest lodging is anticipated to open in Summer of 2020. If you would
