Bright Angel Trail Closure 2026: What Grand Canyon Visitors Need to Know

Updated October 16, 2026

Visitors planning to hike the Grand Canyon’s famous Bright Angel Trail should be aware of important trail closures following severe flash flooding in August 2026. While portions of the popular South Rim trail remain open, access to the Colorado River and several inner canyon destinations is currently restricted.

Why Is Bright Angel Trail Closed?

On August 29, 2026, devastating flash floods swept through Bright Angel Canyon, causing extensive damage to trails, bridges, utilities, and infrastructure near Phantom Ranch.

In response, the National Park Service closed several inner canyon trails to protect visitors and allow crews to assess damage and begin repairs.

Which Sections of Bright Angel Trail Are Open?

The good news is that visitors can still experience much of Bright Angel Trail.

Currently open:

  • Bright Angel Trail from the South Rim trailhead to Havasupai Gardens and the Tonto Trail junction.
  • Plateau Point Trail, offering spectacular views of the Colorado River.
  • Portions of the Tonto Trail connecting Havasupai Gardens and the South Kaibab Trail.

Currently closed:

  • Bright Angel Trail below the Tonto Trail junction toward the Colorado River.
  • South Kaibab Trail below Tip-Off Point.
  • North Kaibab Trail and traditional Rim-to-Rim hiking routes.
  • Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel Campground.

There is currently no announced reopening date for the affected areas.

Important Hiking Information

Visitors should also be aware that drinking water is currently unavailable at the 1.5-Mile Resthouse, 3-Mile Resthouse, and Havasupai Gardens. Hikers should carry sufficient water and carefully plan their return journey.

Before beginning any hike, check the National Park Service’s latest trail updates.

Planning Your Grand Canyon Visit?

Despite these closures, the Grand Canyon’s South Rim remains an incredible destination, with breathtaking viewpoints, scenic drives, and numerous visitor experiences available.

Before entering the park, stop at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center IMAX in Tusayan to get helpful information and experience Grand Canyon: Rivers of Time on the giant IMAX screen.

With a little advance planning, you can still enjoy an unforgettable Grand Canyon adventure.
