UPDATE SEPT. 3, 2024.  The Grand Canyon National Park have announced hotels in the park will reopen this Thursday, September 5.

Grand Canyon National Park will reopen hotels on the park’s South Rim beginning Thursday, September 5 and transition down to Stage 3 water restrictions.

Park water utility crews successfully completed complex repairs to the Transcanyon Waterline late last week and resumed pumping water without identifying any new breaks. The park will operate under Stage 3 water restrictions until the water storage tanks have adequate capacity to return to routine water conservation practices.  

Effective August 29, 2024, Grand Canyon National Park will close all overnight accommodations due to urgent repairs required on the Transcanyon Waterline, which has sustained four significant breaks. This closure affects only the park’s internal lodging facilities; hotels and motels in the surrounding areas, such as those in Tusayan outside the South Rim, will remain open. Given the expected high demand, we recommend booking accommodations in Tusayan promptly. For further information on local hotels, please visit our Grand Canyon Hotels webpage.

Since July 8, the park has faced challenges with water supply, and currently, no water is being pumped to either the South or North Rim. The park has not said when the closures will be lifted other than to say “measures will be enacted for the South Rim for the foreseeable future”.  The Grand Canyon National Park IMAX will continue to follow the story and update this page according.
