From Landscapes and wildlife to history and adventure, what’s the one thing about the Grand Canyon that has intrigued you?

The opportunity to see the Grand Canyon from a different perspective has appealed to me for years. Having seen the awe inspiring view from the South Rim twice before, I have been curious about how it looked, felt, smelled deep in the canyon. The landscapes from inside the canyon didn’t disappoint!

What are five things your Backpack to the Canyon must contain?

Definitely bring a camera (or camera phone). Plenty of food and water are a necessity for hiking rim-to-rim. I brought extra clothing, first aid support (wraps, etc) and a headlamp as well since we did part of the hike in the dark.

What is travel to you in one word?

Exploration.

What type of camera did you bring? Any tips on shooting the Grand Canyon?

I used my camera phone simply for the reason that I needed something light for the rim-to-rim hike. Any camera capable of capturing a wide angle of view would work great. One tip I would pass on is that since the size and scale of the canyon is so unbelievable, it helps to use reference objects (people for example) in your shots so that your viewers can get an idea of it’s immenseness. I also recommend viewing the same area at different times of day since the lighting changes in the canyon are dramatic!

What surprised you about the Grand Canyon?

I was surprised at how much water was at the base of the canyon. Almost the entire trail had a stream or river nearby. I was also surprised at how varied the scenery was. We went from highland pines to low brush to sheer rock walls. Even the rock colors change throughout the trail!

As a travel destination, how would you rank the Grand Canyon from 1 to 10? 10

Tell us a little about yourself!

I am a documentary filmmaker based in San Diego, CA. I love the outdoors, hiking, and shooting landscapes. My wife, Jennifer, and I came to Grand Canyon for the sole purpose of hiking rim-to-rim (from the South Rim to the North Rim) in one day.
