From Landscapes and wildlife to history and adventure, what’s the one thing about the Grand Canyon that has intrigued you?

Experiencing the beauty and grandeur of the canyon, and realizing though we hiked a few miles, it was intriguing that we saw just a small bit of the vast canyon. I know I must come back to see more of the canyon.

If this is your first visit to Grand Canyon, what motivated you to visit? If this is a revisit, what’s your reason for wanting to come back?

Though I had been to the Grand Canyon in the past, I had only seen the Canyon from the South Rim. I had never hiked down into the Canyon, so jumped at the chance to go backpacking with my experienced dental friends.

What are five things your Backpack to the Canyon must contain?

1) A camera. I actually brought 2! My iPhone and a small camera to capture as many pictures as I could get!

2) Water and electrolytes, to avoid dehydration.

3) Duct tape- used to solve all kinds of problems including taping blisters.

4) High energy snacks. I like nuts and dried fruits.

5) A head lamp. It gets plenty dark when the sun goes down!

What is the best way to get to the Grand Canyon – By Air, By Road or By Rail? Why?

Since I live in Arizona, the best way for me to get to the Grand Canyon is by car. I can see and experience all the sights in and around the canyon and stop when I want to explore something further.

Start planning your trip about a year or more in advance. Train by hiking with your backpack. Make sure your shoes are the proper size.

What type of camera did you bring? Any tips on shooting the Grand Canyon?

I brought both my iPhone with some detachable lenses and a small Canon camera. It is hard to take a bad picture in the Grand Canyon!

What surprised you about the Grand Canyon?

That we hiked just a small portion of the canyon. It is huge. Once we had hiked out and were looking down into the canyon, I was able to put it into perspective just how large the canyon actually is.

Tell us a little about yourself!

I am a dentist, born and raised in Arizona. My interests include photography, travel and physical fitness. This was my first trip down into the canyon. What a great experience! I am looking forward to another trip, sometime in the future. Some dental friends are avid Grand Canyon hikers, and they asked if I wanted to experience a backpacking trip with them. I jumped at the chance! We had planned our trip over the last year, and almost had it derailed by the governmental shutdown in early October. Luckily they opened the Grand Canyon up a few days before we were to arrive. Disaster averted!
