Phantom Ranch has Served the Guests of the Grand Canyon for Nearly a Century

Phantom Ranch to close from January 2 to March 30 2025

Phantom Ranch, the famous retreat at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, will be taking a short break for three months next year.

The National Park Service announced that the closure will run from January 2 to March 30, 2025. During this time, crews will be hard at work on the Transcanyon Waterline project, which requires some serious excavation.

This waterline is essential—it carries water all the way from Roaring Springs near the North Rim, across the canyon, to the South Rim. The current system is getting old and has been prone to breaking down, sometimes taking days to repair. One recent incident even caused the closure of South Rim lodging just before the busy Labor Day weekend.

The pipeline replacement, a $200 million project, is expected to be completed by 2027.

While the work is being done, park officials are making sure everyone stays safe by scheduling several additional closures in the coming months:

Bright Angel Trail (north of Havasupai Gardens) and Silver Bridge from October 21 to May 14, 2025

Bright Angel Campground from November 4 to May 14, 2025

Plateau Point Trail (from the Tonto Trail Junction north of Havasupai Gardens to Plateau Point) through May 14, 2025

However, the upper portion of Bright Angel Trail, from the South Rim to Havasupai Gardens, and the Tonto Trail will stay open, along with the South Kaibab Trail, which will be available for all hikers.
